Prevention and wellbeing

We identify and address the needs of tamariki early to support them to thrive.

Our focus

We recognise that we need to identify and address signs of need and vulnerability for te tamaiti as early as possible as this increases their chances in meeting positive outcomes in the short and long term. We maintain a preventative focus in all of our work.

We support te tamaiti to reach their potential to thrive and flourish and achieve their development goals. We focus on their physical and psychological health and their social and educational needs.

We look for opportunities to build on the strengths, skills and resilience of tamariki. When needed, we provide opportunities for healing and recovery.

We support tamariki to be safe and to ‘feel safe’ and secure, with a sense of belonging. We do this by making sure they are able to keep and build secure, loving attachments in a safe, stable, loving home. We make sure they are able to maintain connections with other key people in their lives. We also make sure any planned changes go well for tamariki, and that unexpected changes are well supported.

Quality practice

Quality practice includes:

  • being alert for worries about safety now and in the future
  • being a calm, safe person offering support and listening and taking time to understand
  • showing understanding and care about the challenges for tamariki, reassuring them and providing realistic hope
  • noticing, encouraging and supporting the abilities of te tamaiti to help them achieve their long-term potential
  • being proactive in supporting tamariki and their whānau in strengthening their oranga.

Reflecting on practice

  • Do I know what te tamaiti is worried about and what they would like help with?
  • How am I assessing safety and wellbeing? Do my safety plans reflect the need for tamariki to both ‘be safe’ and ‘feel safe’?
  • What is going well with the whānau and what is worrying us? Have I taken into account the views of whānau in terms of what they are concerned about and what help they would like?
  • What are the known changes coming up, and what needs to be done for these to go well?
  • What do I know about the education, health and development needs and goals for te tamaiti? How can I support them to meet these?
