Policy
Subsequent child
This policy advises what we must do when we become aware that the subsequent child provisions of the Oranga Tamariki Act 1989 (sections 18A to 18D) may apply to a parent and their tamaiti.
Practice approach
See and engage tamariki — guidance
I will see and engage with each tamaiti I am working with, in order to understand their needs, build their trust and ensure they have a say in decisions.
Care
Completing police vetting
We police vet people, such as caregiver or adoptive parent applicants, mentors or volunteers, to help us assess their suitability.
Interventions
Talking with tamariki, whānau or family and caregivers about the COVID-19 vaccine
This guidance supports kaimahi who work directly with tamariki and rangatahi and their whānau or family and caregivers to help them to have conversations about vaccination against COVID-19.
Care
Remain or return to living with a caregiver
Rangatahi in the custody of Oranga Tamariki can remain living with a caregiver after they turn 18 or they can return to living with a caregiver until they turn 21.
Practice approach
See and engage whānau, wider family, caregivers and when appropriate victims of offending by tamariki — guidance
I will see and engage with family, whānau, caregivers and victims, in order to understand their needs and ensure they have a say in decisions about te tamaiti.
Assessment and planning
Talking with and listening to tamariki and rangatahi
When tamariki and rangatahi have been harmed or may be at risk, we engage, talk with them and listen to understand how they’ve been impacted by their experiences to inform our understanding of them and any planning with them, whānau or family and others.
Disability
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) and neurodiversity
All tamariki, rangatahi, whānau or families have mana ahua ake – uniqueness and potential within their collective structure. People living with FASD and neurodiversity have rights and their own identity and strengths, and can have fulfilling lives.
Care
Explaining rights and entitlements to tamariki and rangatahi
Under the National Care Standards, every tamaiti and rangatahi is entitled to receive information about what they can expect when they are in care, their rights and how they will be supported to raise any concerns they have.
Policy
Youth Court
When we are involved with the Youth Court, we need a good understanding of the court processes and how they relate to us and the people we work with.
