Transition to adulthood

We have a responsibility to assist rangatahi who are in, or have left, our long-term care or youth justice residential placements from the age of 15, to acquire the knowledge, skills, resources and supports they need to thrive.

Before rangatahi turn 18 – preparing them to leave our care

We must prepare and assist eligible rangatahi over 15 years old when they leave care or a youth justice residential care arrangement to successfully transition to adulthood.

Advice and assistance when rangatahi are transitioning out of or have left our care or custody

Oranga Tamariki provides advice and assistance to eligible rangatahi who have left our care or custody and who are aged from 15 to 25 years old. This is referred to as the provision of advice and assistance.

Remain or return to living with a caregiver

Rangatahi in the custody of Oranga Tamariki can remain living with a caregiver after they turn 18 or they can return to living with a caregiver until they turn 21.

Maintaining contact

If a transition worker isn’t available, Oranga Tamariki will keep in contact with rangatahi who have left our care or custody after they turn 16 and until their 21st birthday.
