Care
Support for play, recreation and community activities
We must ensure that support is provided to tamariki and rangatahi in care or custody to meet their needs for play, recreation and participation in community activities, including supporting, and assisting caregivers to promote these activities.
Practice approach
Whakamana te tamaiti: Practice empowering tamariki Māori
I will apply the principles of Mana Tamaiti, Whakapapa and Whanaungatanga to my practice, in order to ensure I’m responsive to tamariki and whānau Māori.
Practice tools
Gateway assessments
A gateway assessment is an interagency process that helps to clarify and identify ways to address the health and education needs of tamariki and rangatahi we work with.
Interventions
About family group conferencing
The family group conference brings together te tamaiti or rangatahi and their whānau or family, professionals and others to find ways to support the oranga of te tamaiti or rangatahi and consider the interests and impact of any offending on the victim.
Assessment and planning
Interpreters when English is not the first or preferred language
We support the use of interpreter and translation services when English is not the first or preferred language of te tamaiti or rangatahi or their whānau or family. A sign language interpreter may be required when we are working with someone who is Deaf.
Practice approach
See and engage whānau, wider family, caregivers and when appropriate victims of offending by tamariki — guidance
I will see and engage with family, whānau, caregivers and victims, in order to understand their needs and ensure they have a say in decisions about te tamaiti.

Care, Policy
Caregiver support
The requirements for providing support to Oranga Tamariki approved caregivers (whānau or family and non-whānau or family).
Care
Caregiver support plan
We help caregivers to identify any support or training they need so they can meet the needs of tamariki and rangatahi. We create a support plan to document this additional support.
Interventions
Types of court orders
We need to understand the rights, powers and responsibilities of the different court orders that place a tamaiti in the care or custody of the chief executive. Other orders can also be sought, for example support or services orders.
