Adoption
Selecting an adoptive whānau or family from profiles
Once expectant parents have settled on a plan to place te tamaiti for adoption, we explore their preferences and criteria for an adoptive whānau or family and provide profiles for them to consider, which meet their criteria.
Care
Breastfeeding – caring for and nurturing a pēpi
Breastfeeding connects pēpi and their mother spiritually and emotionally, as well as providing physical nourishment. We ensure breastfeeding and access to breast milk, and the physical connection of pēpi to their parents and whānau or family, is supported
Practice approach
Supervision
Supervision is a recripocal relationship between a supervisor (kaiārahi) and supervisee (kaitiaki). Within the Oranga Tamariki context, the term kaiārahi means to guide, mentor, lead, and the term kaitiaki means to guard, protect and care for.

Care
Financial support for tamariki and rangatahi in care
Oranga Tamariki supports tamariki and rangatahi in care to ensure their assessed needs are met. A financial plan sets out the financial support required to meet those needs. We plan proactively and consider the full range of support needs.
Care
Higher fostercare allowance
The higher fostercare allowance (HFCA) is used when a caregiver requires additional and specific financial support to meet the special needs of te tamaiti or rangatahi in their care that is best provided through a regular higher rate of payment.
Adoption
Caring for the newborn tamaiti before adoption is finalised
When te tamaiti is born we encourage the birthmother to stay in hospital as long as she can and to care for te tamaiti before any placement happens.
Care
Supporting tamariki and rangatahi with their health needs
Good health is essential to oranga and positive life outcomes. We need to support tamariki and rangatahi to access health services, both to maintain their good health and to meet any health and disability needs.
Care
How to access caregiver support and development
Caregivers can access support and development so they're better able to provide safe and loving homes. We help to identify the caregiver support available so caregivers can better meet the needs of tamariki.
