We need to visit tamariki and rangatahi as often as they need us to so they can participate and influence decisions about their safety, care and wellbeing needs.

Advice and assistance when rangatahi are transitioning out of or have left our care or custody

Oranga Tamariki provides advice and assistance to eligible rangatahi who have left our care or custody and who are aged from 15 to 25 years old. This is referred to as the provision of advice and assistance.

Breastfeeding connects pēpi and their mother spiritually and emotionally, as well as providing physical nourishment. We ensure breastfeeding and access to breast milk, and the physical connection of pēpi to their parents and whānau or family, is supported

Interpreters when English is not the first or preferred language

We support the use of interpreter and translation services when English is not the first or preferred language of te tamaiti or rangatahi or their whānau or family. A sign language interpreter may be required when we are working with someone who is Deaf.

Youth justice, Interventions

Working in the Youth Court Te Kōti Taiohi o Aotearoa

Tamariki and rangatahi charged with offences appear in the Youth Court, Te Kōti Rangatahi or the Pasifika Court. Te Kōti Rangatahi and the Pasifika Court work within the Youth Court legal structure and have culturally appropriate venues and processes.

Maintaining whānau or family relationships when te tamaiti or rangatahi is living away from home

We establish, maintain and strengthen relationships between tamariki, rangatahi and their family, whānau, hapū and iwi when they are living away from home. For court-directed contact, we provide robust information to guide decision-making.

Youth justice, Interventions

Orders and monitoring for the Youth Court Te Kōti Taiohi o Aotearoa

We support and monitor tamariki and rangatahi subject to Youth Court orders for offences that have been proved or not denied. We work with whānau, family and other key people supporting them to comply with court orders by meeting their plan's objectives.
