Residential care
The journey through a care and protection residence for tamariki and rangatahi
We want tamariki and rangatahi to reach their full potential. Residential care provides a safe and stable placement for tamariki and rangatahi when they aren’t able to be placed in the community.
Assessment and planning
Working effectively with whānau or families impacted by violence
Family violence is abusive behaviour that can occur across whakapapa and generations and has complex causes. To support change, we consider restorative approaches that engage the whole whānau or family, rather than focusing on individuals or incidences.
Youth justice, Interventions
Planning for the Youth Court Te Kōti Taiohi o Aotearoa
Early preparation, thorough planning and collaboration are vital in supporting tamariki and rangatahi who appear in the Youth Court, Te Kōti Rangatahi or the Pasifika Court. We also engage with victims to consider their views and keep them informed.
Interventions
Tamariki with offending behaviours
When offending behaviours start in childhood, early interventions need to focus on the underlying care or protection concerns. We apply an oranga lens to help us understand the needs of the tamariki in the context of their whānau or family.
Policy
Case recording
Case recording helps us uphold the mana and understand and tell the story of those we work with, including tamariki, rangatahi and their whānau or family. It also helps us understand our engagement with wider networks including hapū and iwi during a case.
Care, Policy
Caregiver support
The requirements for providing support to Oranga Tamariki approved caregivers (whānau or family and non-whānau or family).
Assessment and planning
Specialist child interviews
Specialist child interviews are conducted as part of our mahi when te tamaiti or rangatahi may have been the victim of abuse or witnessed an incident that may constitute a criminal offence.
Practice approach
Oranga and the tangata whenua and bicultural supervision model
Oranga is central to the supervision model and is expressed as kaimahi ora, mahi ora and whānau ora. If supervision maintains a central focus on the ora of kaimahi, and kaimahi are enabled within their workplace, they will be able to promote whānau ora.
Care
Medical examinations and treatment
Tamariki or rangatahi may need a medical exam or treatment for obvious illness or injury, or at other times such as after an unauthorised absence or being missing, engaging in high-risk behaviour or sharing they've been harmed but we can’t see an injury.
Care, Policy
Transition to adulthood — Entitlement to remain or return to live with a caregiver
This policy sets out our obligations to eligible rangatahi and caregivers when rangatahi wish to remain with, or return to live with, a caregiver.
