Strengthening our response to unborn and newborn pēpi
When we receive a report of concern for a newborn or unborn pēpi, we work with their family, whānau, hapū, iwi and family group using the same approach we use for all our mahi, with additional considerations to strengthen our response.

Adoption
Involving whānau or family in the adoption decision
We should make every effort to involve the expectant parents’ whānau or family when adoption is being considered.
Care
Assessment interviews and hui for caregivers or adoptive applicants
We support open discussion when interviewing caregiver and adoptive parent applicants. Hui ā-whānau can be used as an alternative to interviews for whānau or family caregiver applicants.
Adoption
Meeting and making a contact agreement
We encourage birthparents and adoptive applicants to meet after the birth of te tamaiti. We help them create a contact agreement that records their commitment to information sharing and ongoing contact arrangements.
Care
Before rangatahi turn 18 – preparing them to leave our care
We must prepare and assist eligible rangatahi over 15 years old when they leave care or a youth justice residential care arrangement to successfully transition to adulthood.
Interventions, Policy
Family group conferences for care or protection concerns
We support tamariki and rangatahi and their whānau or family to create their own solutions to address care or protection concerns through the family group conference process, from referral to review, including when a family group conference is reconvened.
Care
Caregiver support plan
We help caregivers to identify any support or training they need so they can meet the needs of tamariki and rangatahi. We create a support plan to document this additional support.
