Practice approach
Tūranga whakaaro
This phase of the supervision session involves revisiting your foundation – the takepū or principles guiding your practice.
Care, Policy
Transition to adulthood — Maintaining contact
We must maintain contact with eligible rangatahi who have left care or a youth justice residential placement when a transition worker isn’t available through a local provider.
Care
Financial support for tamariki and rangatahi in care
Oranga Tamariki supports tamariki and rangatahi in care to ensure their assessed needs are met. A financial plan sets out the financial support required to meet those needs. We plan proactively and consider the full range of support needs.
Adoption
The New Zealand Central Authority and accredited adoption agencies under the Hague Convention
An adoption of te tamaiti from overseas countries by New Zealand citizens and permanent residents must comply with New Zealand’s international obligations and the laws of the countries involved within the framework and principles of the Hague Convention.
Assessment and planning
Protection Order advice or report
Oranga Tamariki may be required to provide brief written advice or a report to the Family Court in relation to an application for a Protection Order made by or against a tamaiti or rangatahi.
Practice approach
Whakairo kaupapa
In this phase of the supervision session, we make the connections between our theories (reflective ponderings of patterns) and actual practice.
Assessment and planning
Conducting an assessment
Assessment is an ongoing process of gathering information to build and deepen understanding, requiring critical thinking and analysis. We articulate our understanding in the assessment report.
Youth justice, Interventions
Working in the Youth Court Te Kōti Taiohi o Aotearoa
Tamariki and rangatahi charged with offences appear in the Youth Court, Te Kōti Rangatahi or the Pasifika Court. Te Kōti Rangatahi and the Pasifika Court work within the Youth Court legal structure and have culturally appropriate venues and processes.
Assessment and planning
Female genital mutilation
We use a sensitive and considered approach for child protection cases where the practice of female genital mutilation has been alleged.
Care
Enrolling and engaging tamariki and rangatahi in care in education
We work in partnership to build a shared understanding of the education needs of tamariki and rangatahi, identify the best education environment for them and develop a plan. A good relationship with the school and effective communication are vital.
