Appointing a youth advocate for an intention-to-charge family group conference – section 248A

Oranga Tamariki must appoint a youth advocate for tamariki and rangatahi referred for an intention-to-charge family group conference if any of their alleged offences could be subject to a sentence of imprisonment of 10 years or more.
Restorative justice and the family group conference – section 258(2)

A family group conference convened for an alleged offence by te tamaiti or rangatahi can consider whether they should be prosecuted for the offence or whether they can be dealt with in some other way, including restorative justice.

We ensure tamariki and rangatahi get the support they need so they have the best chance of completing a youth justice family group conference plan or complying with a Youth Court order.

A whānau or family meeting or hui ā-whānau should be held within 7 working days for each section 14(1)(e) family group conference referral intake so whānau or family can consider the initial supports and services that might reduce the risk of reoffending.
