Policy
Supporting the participation of tamariki and rangatahi
We must ensure tamariki and rangatahi have the information and support they need to freely express their views and actively participate in the work we do together.
Care
Assessing information from suitability checks
We need to analyse the information we get from checks, such as police, medical and referee checks. We should consider if caregiver and adoptive parent applicants and their households are suitable and safe.
Information sharing
Disclosing information
Any decision to disclose information should be done to help support and protect tamariki or rangatahi, or assist their whānau or family to help tamariki or rangatahi as early as possible.
Assessment and planning
Mass allegation investigations
We work with Police on any allegation of abuse of 3 or more tamariki or rangatahi. We address the care or protection needs of tamariki or rangatahi with support from Police.
Care, Intake, Assessment and planning
Working with tamariki aged under 5 years
We support tamariki and whānau or family to describe, determine, realise and sustain their oranga. Tamariki aged under 5 years have particular vulnerabilities that impact their experience of oranga. We draw on Te Toka Tūmoana takepū to support our mahi.
Residential care, Youth justice, Policy
Working with tamariki and rangatahi in remand homes
Social workers and remand home kaimahi support tamariki and rangatahi when they're living in or transitioning to or from a remand home.
Practice approach
Physical abuse
Physical abuse involves situations where a tamaiti has an injury or was at serious risk of injury. The harm could be deliberate or unintentionally result from a deliberate action.
Interventions
Holding the care and protection family group conference
The conference is facilitated so it supports te tamaiti or rangatahi, their whānau or family and others participating to safely give, receive and consider information, express views and be actively involved in making decisions, recommendations and plans.
Adoption
Balancing the Adoption Act and the Oranga Tamariki Act
When parents are considering adoption, we need to understand statutory obligations and be able to explain the impact of different legislation to birthparents so we can help uphold the mana of everyone.
