Care, Policy
Rangatahi in care or custody driving a vehicle
Rangatahi in care or custody need to be supported to gain a driver licence like all rangatahi in Aotearoa need support. We ensure rangatahi and vehicle owners understand the implications, responsibilities, and the support available from Oranga Tamariki.
Care
Care agreements
Sections 139 and 140 of the Oranga Tamariki Act provide for tamariki and rangatahi to enter care through a voluntary agreement with the parents, guardians or person having care of them. The period of time depends on their age and the type of agreement.
Working with Pacific peoples, Practice approach
Working with Pacific peoples: Va'aifetū
Va'aifetū is a practical guide for integrating Pacific cultures into practice in pursuit of best outcomes for children of Pacific descent.
Care, Policy
Transition to adulthood — Maintaining contact
We must maintain contact with eligible rangatahi who have left care or a youth justice residential placement when a transition worker isn’t available through a local provider.
Working with Māori
Whānau searching
Whānau searching connects tamariki to their whānau network and when done well may extend into hapū and iwi. It helps identify the right people to participate and be involved in whānau decision-making about tamariki wellbeing.
Youth justice, Care, Policy
Tamariki and rangatahi who are missing or whose absence is unauthorised
When tamariki and rangatahi are absent without permission, we work together with others and act promptly to determine their whereabouts and ensure their safety.
Advocacy
Advocacy for parents and whānau or family
We encourage parents and whānau or family to access independent advocacy when we’re involved with them, recognising their right to fully participate at all stages of our involvement, helping reduce disparities and increasing equity for parents and whānau.
Assessment and planning
Police Safety Orders
The Police can issue a Police Safety Order against a person, including a rangatahi, who is or has been in a family relationship with another person if the Police believe the order will help make a person safe from family violence.

Care
Support for play, recreation and community activities
We must ensure that support is provided to tamariki and rangatahi in care or custody to meet their needs for play, recreation and participation in community activities, including supporting, and assisting caregivers to promote these activities.
