NCC support workers
What we need to understand about the roles and responsibilities of NCC support workers and those working with them.Purpose of the NCC support worker role
NCC support workers are a core part of the Oranga Tamariki national contact centre (NCC) workforce. Although working in a statutory environment, NCC support workers do not hold any statutory powers, delegations or decision-making authority under the Oranga Tamariki Act 1989 or exercise any statutory authority.
The purpose of the role is to provide practical, operational, administrative and engagement support that enables social workers to undertake their statutory responsibilities safely and effectively.
All case responsibility, assessment, analysis, recommendation and decision-making, and legal authority, remain with the NCC social worker or delegated decision-maker.

Template: NCC support worker tasks
The following template supports NCC support workers to record their work in CYRAS and CGIS.
- It is completed by the NCC support worker to record tasks directed by the social worker or supervisor, the actions taken, and any information gathered.
- It is used to record engagement with tamariki, rangatahi, whānau or families, professionals and colleagues, as well as other tasks completed, including after-hours support and the exploration of emergency care options.
Once completed, the NCC support worker sends a CYRAS or CGIS reminder to the NCC social worker or supervisor for review.
Accurate recording:
- supports continuity of social work services by ensuring information gathered by the NCC support worker is available to the social worker, supervisor and others involved with te tamaiti or rangatahi
- helps build a clear picture of progress, strengths, concerns and outcomes to inform planning and decision-making
- promotes consistency, accountability and quality practice across Oranga Tamariki.
