Rangatahi in the custody of Oranga Tamariki can remain living with a caregiver after they turn 18 or they can return to living with a caregiver until they turn 21.

Assessment is an ongoing process of building understanding to inform whānau or family and professional decision-making. Following a report of concern, we build and deepen understanding across 3 phases, as needed – initial, core and full assessment.

The core phase of assessment builds on the initial phase to deepen our understanding of oranga, establishing a picture of the safety, strengths, vulnerability and needs of te tamaiti or rangatahi and their whānau or family.

A small number of children and young people adopted from Samoa and living in New Zealand may experience harm and exploitation.

We help caregivers to identify any support or training they need so they can meet the needs of tamariki and rangatahi. We create a support plan to document this additional support.

Visits with tamariki and rangatahi in care or custody
We need to visit tamariki and rangatahi as often as they need us to so they can participate and influence decisions about their safety, care and wellbeing needs.

Talking with and listening to tamariki and rangatahi
When tamariki and rangatahi have been harmed or may be at risk, we engage, talk with them and listen to understand how they’ve been impacted by their experiences to inform our understanding of them and any planning with them, whānau or family and others.
