Care
Support for play, recreation and community activities
We must ensure that support is provided to tamariki and rangatahi in care or custody to meet their needs for play, recreation and participation in community activities, including supporting, and assisting caregivers to promote these activities.

Legal statuses for custody, guardianship or placement
The Oranga Tamariki Act 1989, Care of Children Act 2004, Adoption Act 1955 and Immigration Act 2009 have provisions for when Oranga Tamariki must approve the care arrangement for tamariki and rangatahi when they’re unable to live with their parents.
Care
Care agreements
Sections 139 and 140 of the Oranga Tamariki Act provide for tamariki and rangatahi to enter care through a voluntary agreement with the parents, guardians or person having care of them. The period of time depends on their age and the type of agreement.

Te Puna Oranga is our holistic and ecological approach to understanding harm, risk and safety, and the needs, strengths and aspirations of tamariki, rangatahi and whānau or family for their sustained oranga.

Child Support, Unsupported Child's Benefit and Orphan's Benefit
We can help people caring for tamariki or rangatahi who are not in the custody of the Oranga Tamariki chief executive to apply for financial support through Child Support, the Unsupported Child’s Benefit and the Orphan's Benefit.
