Oranga-framed practice prompts

The oranga-framed practice prompts demonstrate how the ebbs and flows of life are part of each dimension of oranga. They prompt us to deepen our understanding and think critically about the aspects of each dimension of oranga and the interconnections.

About the oranga-framed practice prompts

Six core dimensions support a holistic understanding of oranga and provide signposts for practising in ways that are relational, inclusive and restorative:

  • wairua
  • ngākau
  • whānau
  • tinana
  • waiora
  • hinengaro.

Oranga is not static. It ebbs and flows with life’s rhythm and changes of circumstance, creating vulnerability and protection, and building resilience and potential. Different manifestations of harm such as violence, substance misuse or offending can be symptomatic, or an outcome, of ebbing oranga across one dimension or many.

The oranga-framed practice prompts support us to think about what the ebb and flow of each dimension may look like for tamariki, rangatahi, whānau and family. They support us to think about what we might look for, experience and ask about when we work with them.

These practice prompts are inclusive of tamariki, rangatahi, whanau and families – this also includes caregiving whānau or families and victims of child or youth offending.

The practice prompts:

  • highlight the importance of each dimension of oranga
  • demonstrate ways in which the ebbs and flows of life are part of each dimension of oranga
  • prompt us to think critically about the aspects of each dimension of oranga and the interconnections
  • are not an exhaustive list, but are a practical guide to help us to deepen our understanding of oranga with tamariki, rangatahi, whānau or family and others.
