Allied support workers

What we need to understand about the roles and responsibilities of allied support workers and those working with them.

Purpose of the allied support worker role

Allied support workers are a core part of the Oranga Tamariki care and protection and caregiver recruitment and support workforce. Although working in a statutory environment, allied support workers do not hold any statutory powers, delegations or decision-making authority under the Oranga Tamariki Act 1989 or exercise any statutory authority.

The purpose of the role is to provide practical, operational, administrative and engagement support that enables social workers to undertake their statutory responsibilities safely and effectively.

All case responsibility, assessment, analysis, recommendation and decision-making, and legal authority remain with the allocated social worker or delegated decision-maker.
